Abstract:
Recently, new technologies including global satellite positioning, wireless communications, and smartphones have emerged. These technologies have impacted all travel modes including public transportation and have garnered significant attention across the spectrum of interests. This awareness has caused growing speculation on the implications of technology on everything from roadway safety to mobility, the environment, land use patterns, and the economy. Potential consequences include the change of public transit as we know it as automated on-demand vehicles replace traditional fixed-route services, to a decline in personal automobile ownership as shared mobility options become readily available. This paper explores these issues and potential consequences, intending to get the public transit perspective on the technology impact on transit and mobility.
