Abstract:
This guidebook showcases an international perspective on accessibility issues that Bus Rapid Transit systems face in less-wealthy countries. This guidebook is aimed at systems that may have concerns related to their Bus Rapid Transit system not meeting their potential in serving all passengers. Bus Rapid Transit systems are increasing in popularity, creating an opportunity to create accessible transportation for passengers with disabilities, seniors, and others that would benefit from inclusive designs. These systems, along with rail, metro, and other forms of public transit, enable new categories of passengers to benefit from an improved level of safe, accessible, and reliable public transportation. Emerging international guidelines for inclusive design are not being consistently followed, causing some systems to fall short due to failures to incorporate feedback from seniors or passengers with disabilities.
Topics covered in this guidebook include: forecasting demand for inclusive Bus Rapid Transit system design, problems with pedestrian bridges, mitigating the bus-to-platform gap, high floor and low floor buses, pedestrian infrastructure issues, feeder bus/taxi/service route issues, and working with the community.
